Creating and Running an Advanced Test

Create an advanced test for the highest level of control over your test configuration. This test provides greater flexibility but more complexity. It is recommended for advanced users.
  1. Click the New Test icon on the toolbar or select File > New > Test.
  2. Select the project in which you want to create the test, or click New Project, and then create a new project for the test.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Enter a name for the new test, and then click Next.
  5. Select either Application or Device:

Application. Requires only a client, such as Avalanche to run against some other infrastructure of devices, such as web, FTP, streaming, or mail infrastructures.

Device. Requires a client and a server, and some number of devices in between, such as a firewall, SLB, or SSL accelerator.

  6. Select Advanced Test, and then click Finish. A set of tabs appear that you use to configure your test.
  7. Complete entries to define the client information:
    • Use the Client Load tab to define the load applied to the test. You will define general and timing information, and then use the arrow buttons and fields in the Phase Editor to define the desired load.
    • Use the Client Actions tab to define the actions for the test.
    • Use the Client Profiles tab to configure the client user behavior.
    • Use the Client Network tab to configure network characteristics.
    • Use the Client Subnets Tab to define the range of client IP addresses from which you want to generate client traffic.
    • Use the PPP Group and PPPoE Group windows to configure Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) parameters and Point-to-Point over Ethernet Protocol (PPP) parameters.
    • Use the Client Ports tab to identify the ports that you want to use for client traffic.
    • Use the Client Associations tab to build your test by associating a load, a list of actions, a user (client) profile, and a port.
  8. If you selected to create a device test, complete entries to define the server information:
    • Use the Server Profile tab to configure user behavior for the server.
    • Use the Server Transaction tab to configure transactions for the server.
    • Use the Server Network tab to define TCP and IP parameters for the server.
    • Use the Subnets tab to define the range of IP Addresses from which you want to generate traffic.
    • Use the Server Ports tab to identify the ports that you want to use for traffic.
    • Use the Server Associations tab to associate various configurations and profiles to a server test.
  9. Click the Run Test icon. The Monitor tab appears. From this tab you can monitor test statistics as Avalanche reports them.

NOTE: To view the results of a completed test, click the Results tab.
